Who is Clare Ryan Gardens?
Myself, Clare Ryan BSc hons. & Paul Squire BSc hons., initially started Clare Ryan Gardens in Beverly, East Yorkshire, in 1999 after gaining practical landscaping, land management and horticultural experience in both the private and public sector.
After a successful 3 years in Yorkshire, we decided to travel further afield in pursuit of our interests. Living in New Zealand for one year, we spent periods working on organic farms, and for a time with an established programme working towards the regeneration & development of native flora on a small island off Christchurch. While making the most of the surf in Christchurch, Paul worked with a local landscape gardener who specialized in coastal, hillside gardens, here he learnt solutions to overcome challenging conditions. I spent time as a volunteer in the Christchurch Polytechnic’s Organic garden, increasing my knowledge of working organic & biodynamic systems.
Upon returning to England, we were eager to start our own project again. In September 2003 we moved to Wooler and started trading again as Clare Ryan Gardens. Why Wooler? Quite simply, for the wild land & seascapes, abundant wildlife and the peace found here in Northumberland.
Over the past four years through determined hard work & a very warm welcome from the locals we have, established a good network of clients. Now much of our work comes via recommendations.
We are presently focusing on increasing the garden design & site management side of the business.
Throughout the year we manage a number of large private gardens, including a 2 acre Walled Garden with over 40 varieties of Rosa. We develop & create new planting schemes, plan & implement skilled works such as seasonal pruning, restoration & general care of all plants.
Our consultations generally coincide with a new design or appointment of skilled works, but we are happy to consult & offer information for you to implement.
We constantly upgrade our knowledge by attending shows, seminars, workshops, garden visits, study and practical trials. We are members of the Henry Doubleday Research Association (HDRA) & the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). We are in contact with the Royal Botanical Gardens in Edinburgh for analytical advice when required.
